ESSENTIAL PURE LINEN - Casamance (F)

For those who love things pure and natural, linen is an obvious choice. When Casamance expressed their need for a linen wallcovering I immediately felt what direction it had to go. Color, material and pattern had to work together, be balanced, be an ode to the rich history of linen.

Our part in the Linessence collection is the plain called Linon and the patterned called Filea.

We started with 4 different fabrics ranging from black to white linen. The plain needed to become alive, had to tell a story. So it was crushed an laminated onto a paper backing.
This 'crushing' is a random process, making each meter look different. Once crushed it was color coated with a mat varnish, giving dept to the pleats and a weathered, natural effect.

Design inspiration for Filea came from ancient stone wall carvings - as old as the use of linen itself. Patterns fading away by time, turning abstract, with some point of recognition reminding us of the past.  The design has a raised print effect, taking on the unevenness of the surface. The use of a mat, chalky ink makes it look dry, as it arrises from the mat fabric.

Intens color research was needed to find the right combination for each of the bases. Starting with initialmy well over 60 colors we ended with 15 in the collection.
